Presidency MessageBearing Witness for Christby Margaret Turley"To Thine Own Self Be True" is the theme for our Conference this year. As I think about this statement, I feel that first and foremost we must remember who we are. We are daughters of God. We are of royal birth, we have a heritage that is almost inconceivable. Thus, when I am being true to myself, I am being true to my spiritual self. As we write we need to keep these thoughts in mind. We are sisters of our Lord, jesus Christ. If He were writing, He would say everything perfectly. Since we want our work to be representative of who we really are, and of Him, perhaps we could ask ourselves how would Jesus say this? Would Christ have me write this? The only way we can know if we are being true to ourselves and God is by the spirit. We can study and pray, and then leave ourselves open for inspiration and revealed direction from our Heavenly Home above. At times when I get the warm feeling of the correctness of the message, and the truth of what is to be said, I can't type fast enough to get all of the incoming messages down. No matter what we are writing, we are witnesses for jesus Christ. We need to remember this in the language we use, in the tone we set, and the message we convey. Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying all our writing needs to be a missionary pamphlet or a doctrinal exposition. But we still can set an example for others by keeping our standards high, no matter what genre we choose to compose in. Much missionary work has been done through good fiction written with high moral value content. Let us all be true to ourselves and to those teachings we know to be right. |
